Skin of Sunset
BOOK SIGNING
Join us on March 20th as LoPressionism Gallery hosts our first ever book signing and art show from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Novelist David Johansson, author of "Skin of Sunset", Nancy Dillen, artist of the books cover art "Lay By", will be in attendance. The two artists became acquainted while Dillen, was a professor at Brevard Community College, where Johansson currently teaches literature and film. Set in Melbourne Beach, Johansson's book explores the lives of three college roommates who go on to establish a law firm, only to discover that infidelity and greed doom them to acts of revenge and murder. March 20th will allow visitors a unique opportunity to meet two artists working in different mediums. The book "Skin of Sunset" and prints of "Lay By" will be available during the signing.

PINE NEEDLE BASKETS MAKING
Pine needle baskets have existed for hundreds of years, and are often associated with Native American artistry. These baskets are formed using a weaving technique called "coilng" where the basket is built up by lashing or stitching bundled pine needles together until the basket reaches the desired size and shape. In this 2 day class, Viola Pace Knudsen will share her know how in constructing these beautiful baskets. Students can expect to go home with a small versatile basket and the knowledge to be able to make more later on with what they have learned. The cost for this class is $95.00 including a $20 depossit and will be held on June 6th and 13th from 2-4pm. Please call (321) 722-6000 to register.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK...
Many times we get requests from our customers to "appraise" or put a value on their found art and collectibles. As much as we love to hear that people are curious about their pieces we are not certified appraisers. We can however offer some suggestions. First of all use a search engine to look up a signature. If you can make out the name or part of it you have a great start! Unfortunately, once you have figured out the name of the artist you feel stuck; most websites out there require memberships to find out auction results. FindArtInfo.com requires a membership for the good stuff, but, you can see some auction results (no images however). This us useful if you are certain of an artists identity, and you can always type the painting titles in the auction results into a search engine and locate an image that way. Another thing you can do is ask your family questions. How long have we had it and how old was it when we got it, this can establish an approximate date. Then look at the medium. Is it a painting, lithograph, drawing, etching, wood, stone, and so on. Then go about contacting specialists. For example, if you think you have a watercolor from that you acquired from your grandmother in Georgia, contact a Georgian watercolor museum or association. We at LoPressionism Gallery can offer assistance in pointing you in the right direction. With 2 art historians, an artist, and an image magnifier we can help you determine medium, date, condition. For more information on how we can help, call 722-6000 or e-mail us.
