THE LORAX "I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees. For the trees have no tongues, so I'm asking you please at the top of my lungs." Dr. Seuss's proclaimed favorite book "The Lorax" was over 30 years ahead of its time. Many individuals and groups are "going green" as taking care of the environment climbs the national agenda. Published in 1971 after a trip to Africa, Dr. Seuss wrote his most political book up to that date. The Once-ler travels to a pristine jungle filled with animals and trees and sets up his camp. He soon discovers the wonderful traits of the tufts of the indigenous Truffula trees. Capitalizing on their uniqueness, the Once-ler begins to hack down the forest, marking the appearance of the Lorax. As the speaker for the trees and animals, the Lorax pleads with the Once-ler to stop his production of use-less garments from the Truffula tufts. The Once-ler, consumed by greed, does not heed the Lorax's warning and chops down all of the trees and pollutes the lake, land, and sky leaving all of the playful forest creatures homeless. The story ends with the fate of the animals and trees in our hands as the Once-ler passes us the very last Truffula seed. This cautionary tale of environmental depletion leaves a lasting impression on children and adults alike. The 2009 Dr. Seuss Art Show, to be held here at LoPressionism Gallery in the fall, will have available "Earth Friendly Lorax" a work used to launch The Lorax Project. The project is an initiative to engage corporations and individuals to do their part to aid in environmental conservation. The serigraphs are printed on paper from earth friendly mills and use water based inks. For more information on the "Earth Friendly Lorax" click here or call 722-6000. |
