MASTERS OF ART POSTER CONTEST WINNER LoPressionism's own Heather Everett was announced the winner of this years Masters of Art Poster Contest. Heather describes her work as "radically simplified chromatic abstraction." She uses acrylics as her preferred medium due to the richness and versatility they provide. She also feels that acrylics create endless possibilities. When asked what her favorite part about being involved in the contest was, she stated that she enjoyed working with a theme and time limit as it made her push herself just a little bit more. Artists who submitted for the poster contest this year needed to incorporate the Historic Downtown Melbourne Gateway as well as an "indulgences" theme. This year's work will be available on t-shirts, shopping bags, posters and other items during and following the Masters of Art Festival. |

PRECIOUS METAL CLAY Whether you've already had an introductory PMC class, or a more advanced one, this 6-week session is a fun way to practice techniques, learn new ones if you've never used this innovative material before, and bond with other PMC artists while sharing ideas! Precious Metal Clay (PMC) has revolutionized jewelry making. This user-friendly medium, which looks, acts and feels like clay is, in reality, pulverized granules of pure silver (.999). New students will learn basic techniques to manipulate the clay to produce exquisite jewelry designs of pure, fine silver (.999), including pendants, earrings, rings, and beads. Returning students are invited to use this class as an open studio for independent study to fire and finish their designs with the benefit of having a senior certified PMC instructor available to answer any questions. The instructor will collect a materials fee of $100 (subject to change with the cost of silver) at the first class session, which includes a basic tool kit and enough silver to complete at least three jewelry designs. Additional silver will be available for sale during the class. A different technique / jewelry project will be covered each week. COST: $150.00 per person for the entire 6 weeks, which includes a $20.00 non-refundable registration fee. Call 321-722-6000 to register. This workshop will be held on the first floor of the gallery, so you won't need to haul your tools up the stairs. |

![]() Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People" |
CAUSE & EFFECT It has been observed throughout the history of art that art often bears witness to changing times or acts as a catalyst. Many collectors often seek out works that have inspired or been inspired by political evolution and many museums try their best to hold onto them. One example of a work inspired by the times is Eugene Delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People," (pictured left) which was a commemorative piece done in 1830 of the July Revolution in France the same year. The image continues to act as a visual reminder to the French how they stood up for themselves to build a government that worked for the people. |

A work which helped inspire government aid in the U.S. was Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother." The black and white photograph of a worn mother whose children rest their heads upon her shoulders allowed the public and government officials to see what it was like for starving migrants working in farm camps in California in the 1930s. Shortly after the photograph was released, 20,000lbs of food was rushed to aid the camp. It also inspired author, John Steinback to write the moving novel "The Grapes of Wrath." While the scenes presented may make us feel a bit somber, it is our humanity that sees them as beautiful and inspiring. Local artist, Catherine Wicks recently created a piece entitled "Faith & Allegiance" feeling that "we should never forget history in the making that allow us to live our every day lives." Art can help us connect, relive, memorialize and appreciate all the things that have come and gone and maybe even make things a little better for the future. "Faith & Allegiance" is an original acrylic painting, sized 48" x 36" and is currently available at LoPressionism Gallery for $2,765.00 |

ACCORDING TO THE ARTIST Keith Haring: "The best reason to paint is that there is no reason to paint....I'd like to pretend that I've never seen anything, never read anything, never heard anything...and then make something....Every time I make something I think about the people who are going to see it and every time I see something, I think about the person who made it....Nothing is important...so everything is important." Paul Gauguin: "Painting is the most beautiful of all arts. In it, all sensations are condensed; contemplating it, everyone can create a story at the will of his imagination and.. with a single glance...have his soul invaded by the most profound recollections; no effort of memory, everything is summed up in one instant. A complete art which sums up all the others and completes them." |
