Stefan Alexandres was born in Athens Greece. In 1964 he began his apprenticeship for metal arts in the traditional ways of the old world, as guided through the organized guilds of Greece. His training was grounded for the traditional Byzantine instrumental arts and he worked with the most elemental of metals, iron, copper, brass and silver. Looking back, during these early formative years to global experiences he found himself learning repoussé, sculpting, drawing and painting. His early work, in the manner of historical and inventive images, underscores his current exploration in repoussé, patination and mixed media sculptures.
"My inspiration for an idea employs many sources (news, history, mythology, folktales, real life or psychology) and utilizes many different media. The manipulation of innovative techniques combined with traditional methods revolutionizes my conceptual expressions.

It is important to involve myself in every step of the process; a crucial vehicle that permits me, as an artist, to enter into the manifestation of the work and its message.
I have broken new ground by using unexpected media and compositions that transcend the traditional formulas I learnt in my early years. This exploration is a new era of experimental work with endless possibilities. Preliminary drawings are my means of exploring the potential of an idea by saturating it, with many visual possibilities. These drawings are overlaid and combined together to create a new assemblage that captures the original inspiration.
The final piece is often the culmination of these new visual ideas integrated with visions I had documented years ago in small sketches. Combining traditional methods and innovative techniques with a variety of metals and thicknesses results in numerous opportunities." |
