Stefan Alexandres' original repousse art begins with the drawing, after the selection of the subject matter. Blue-prints are created to lay out the subject and to make the inspiration suitable for the metal relief sculpture known as repousse. The preliminary drawings are a means of exploring the potential of an idea by saturating it with many visual possibilities. Often, these drawings are overlaid and combined together to create a new assemblage that captures the original inspiration. Stefan draws inspiration from history, mythologies, folktales, and real life.
Traditional repousse is made by hand with ancient style tools; no molds or stamps are used. Embossing the metal on a soft surface in order to render the image in the metal begins the process. The design is then chased from the front followed by embossing it from the back. These steps are alternated until the design is fully completed.
